KidZone is an interactive children's installation where everyone can play, discover and engage with a range of different media, activated through movement and sound. It seeks to blur the boundaries between spectator and participator both passively and actively, and to develop 'interactivity' as a new kind of audience engagement.

KidZone was developed through children's workshops, using imagery taken from the local environment. It integrates sights and sounds of Brick Lane into a sensory environment where portraits and self-portraits, photographic and graphic collages are revealed through physical gesture and activity.

The work is a collaboration between VJ Coco and Igloo, an interactive design team comprising Bruno Martelli, Ruth Gibson, Alex Woolner, Amanda Drago and Kit Haigh. Many thanks to Visionary Underground & the Bandish Projekt

KidZone is a Rich Mix commission originally created by Igloo for Maison Folies in Lille France for the Lille3000 Festival. Oct 14 2006 - Jan 14 2007

“…In this space for 6-14 year olds, the body is used as source, ‘the children can compose/ create their own worlds and learn how to develop in an artistic context through play’, explains the information assistant in the gallery. ‘The dance becomes a game.... and allows the child to explore and discover the importance of observation. The music…merges different styles of techno to ragga, from electronica to oriental sounds and pushes the child to sharpen its senses by bringing into relation the body, space, virtual reality, gesture and energy. It’s a magnificent work. Kids really enjoy it and get stuck in: they can’t stop looking at it Taking a child to the ‘Kid zone’ allows him to go on a wild adventure. Clothes, food, smell – it’s all foreign. To do this in a museum? What a funny idea. How boring to take him instead to see an exhibition of paintings and sculpture. With bright eyes, laughing out loud, touching – so many other elements missing from a more traditional cultural encounter. ..” - La Phratrie
